Das aufstrebende Rock-Quartett Dubinski hat Details zu seinem neuen Album „What Is Your Definition Of Happiness?“ bekannt gegeben, das am 7. März 2025 auf LP, CD und in digitalen Formaten auf Gnu Roam über die Kartel Music Group erscheinen wird.
Mit einem ansteckenden Looping-Synthesizer und einem Sample des legendären Gewerkschafters Arthur Scargill. „Downtown Operation“ ist ein sozial bewusster Indie-Banger, der ein Licht auf die vorsätzliche Blindheit der politischen Führer wirft, die ein System aufrechterhalten, das Verzweiflungstaten derjenigen anheizt, die von der Gesellschaft entrechtet werden.
„Unser Vater schlug Arthur Scargill für das Sample vor“, erklärt Sänger Eugene Gaine, der jüngste der vier Gaine-Brüder, die Dubinski bilden. „Er ist aus Limerick nach London ausgewandert, während unsere Mutter als Tochter polnischer und ukrainischer Einwanderer in Bradford geboren wurde. Die Misshandlungen, die unsere Eltern in ihrer Jugend erdulden mussten, vermittelten ihnen sozialistische Werte, und das hat auf uns abgefärbt.“
Mit dem Nachfolger ihres gleichnamigen Debütalbums aus dem Jahr 2022, „What Is Your Definition Of Happiness?“, haben Dubinski ihre Klangpalette mit Hilfe der Grammy-prämierten Produzenten Mike Horner (Franz Ferdinand, Placebo, Hot Chip) und Robbie Nelson (Beck, Royal Blood, The Kooks) erweitert. Auf einem Album, das sich um das Konzept des Glücks und die Herausforderungen, es zu erlangen und zu erhalten, dreht, finden sich Geschichten über zerstörte Träume („Action Comes To Town“), verdammte Romanzen („What’s Even Normal“) und die Gefahren des Überlebens als DIY-Live-Band („New York Arizona and This“), obwohl Dubinski den Trubel und das Abenteuer des Tourlebens liebt. „Viele dieser Songs haben etwas Bittersüßes“, sagt Eugene. „Es ist eine Platte von Liebe, Glück, Schmerz, Trauer, Trauer, Heilung, Wachstum und Akzeptanz. Wir wollten mit diesem Album eine Geschichte erzählen, und sie fließt ähnlich wie der Wechsel der Jahreszeiten.“
Aufgewachsen in North Yorkshire, aber jetzt alle in Edinburgh ansässig, abgesehen von Bassist Donal, der 25 Meilen entfernt in den Borders lebt, sind Dubinski nach dem Mädchennamen ihrer Mutter benannt. Sie starb, als die Band kurz davor war, ihren Plattenvertrag zu unterschreiben. „Es ist etwas Besonderes, den Namen meiner Mutter auf unseren Postern zu sehen“, sagt Eugene. „Sie war immer stolz auf uns und wir wollen sie noch stolzer machen.“
Als der älteste Bruder Eoin in seinen frühen Teenagerjahren sein erstes Schlagzeug bekam, begannen die anderen Brüder bald, Musik zu lernen. Donal lächelt: „Unsere Eltern haben uns beigebracht, sozial bewusst zu sein, und sie haben uns auch sehr ermutigt, kreativ zu sein. Sie ließen uns Musik spielen, wann immer wir wollten. Wir haben um 2 Uhr morgens gejammt, wenn wir Lust dazu hatten.“
Die Gaine-Brüder begannen, einen Teil der Ermutigung ihres Vaters zu erwidern, indem sie ihn mit auf Tournee nahmen. „Er sagt dann: ‚Oh, ich war noch nie dort!‘, wenn er unseren Tourplan sieht“, sagt Donal. Dubinskis neues Album verdient es, dass sie überall hinreichen. Die Band möchte, dass die Menschen entdecken, was Glück für sie bedeutet, nachdem sie ihre Musik gehört haben. Mit einer Musik, die so emotional, eingängig, abwechselnd brennend und beruhigend ist, ist es eine Reise, die es wert ist, unternommen zu werden.

Featuring an infectious looping synth and a sample of iconic trade unionist Arthur Scargill. “Downtown Operation” is a socially conscious indie banger which shines a light on the willful blindness of political leaders who perpetuate a system that fuels acts of desperation by those disenfranchised by society.
“Our Dad suggested Arthur Scargill for the sample,” explains vocalist Eugene Gaine, the youngest of the four Gaine brothers who make up Dubinski. “He emigrated to London from Limerick, while our mum was born in Bradford to Polish and Ukrainian immigrants. The mistreatment our parents endured in their youth gave them socialist values, and that rubbed off on us.”
The follow-up to their eponymous 2022 debut album, ‘What Is Your Definition Of Happiness?’ finds Dubinski broadening their sonic palette with the help of Grammy award winning producers Mike Horner (Franz Ferdinand, Placebo, Hot Chip) and Robbie Nelson (Beck, Royal Blood, The Kooks). Across an album themed around the concept of happiness and the challenges of obtaining and sustaining it, you’ll find tales of crushed dreams (“Action Comes To Town”), doomed romance (“What’s Even Normal”) and the perils of trying to survive as a DIY live band (“New York Arizona and This”), though Dubinski love the buzz and adventure of touring life.The entire album is set to a compelling suite of bulletproof melodies which fuse elements of Franz Ferdinand, Parquet Courts, The Clash, Maximo Park, and even Paul Simon.
“A lot of these songs have something bittersweet to them,” says Eugene. “It’s a record of love, happiness, pain, sorrow, grief, healing, growth and acceptance. We wanted to tell a story with this album, and it flows similar to the way the seasons change.”
Raised in North Yorkshire but now all based in Edinburgh apart from bassist Donal, who lives 25 miles away in the Borders, Dubinski are named after their mother’s maiden name. She died as the band were about to sign their record deal. “It’s special to see mum’s name on our posters,” says Eugene. “She was always proud of us and we want to make her prouder.”
Once eldest brother Eoin got his first drum kit in his early teens, the other brothers soon began learning how to play music. Donal smiles: “Our parents taught us to be socially aware, and they were also so encouraging in letting us be creative. They let us play music at whatever time we wanted. We’d jam at 2am if we felt like it.”
With the Gaine brothers starting to be able to repay some of their father’s encouragement by having him join them on tour. “He’ll say: ‘Oh, I’ve never been there!’ when he sees our tour schedule,” says Donal. Dubinski’s new album deserves to see them reach everywhere. The band want people to explore what happiness means to them after hearing their music. With music this emotional, catchy, by turns searing and calming, it’s a journey worth taking.
