Im Interview stelle ich euch die Schweizer Rockband Midnight Deadbeats näher vor, die gekonnt Old-Classic Rock mit modernen Soundelementen kombinieren. Nach dem Vorgänger „Moonshine Carnival“ ist seit 18.Oktober 2024 die zweite Scheibe „Dance til‘ you die“ am Start. Was einen damit erwartet wollte ich von Sänger und Mastermind Mono Mojo persönlich erfahren

Über das Album

1. Glückwunsch zum neuen Album „Dance til‘ you die“. Auch hier spiegelt sich, wie schon im Vorgänger der Sound des 70er Jahre Rocks. Gewollt?

Mono: Danke, wir sind froh das alles immer geklappt hat. Der Song „Let the Heads roll“ war von Anfang an eher so ein Oldierock-Stück. Sonst denke ich unser zweites Album ist einiges härter, böser und moderner als das Debut.

2. Wie lief der Prozess zum neuen Album ab? Seid ihr zufrieden?

Mono: Wir haben die Instrumente damals bei Marc in seinem Hasenstall eingespielt (Hutch-Studio Oberwil). Das hat Spass gemacht weil der’s drauf hat und wir geübt haben. Den Gesang habe ich dann in unserem Probekeller feucht aufgenommen. Da habe ich aus Versehen die „Projekt-sample-rate“ falsch eingestellt und musste alles noch ein zweites Mal einschreien. In einer höheren Stimmlage. Autsch.

3. Insgesamt wirkt „Dance til‘ you die“ energiegeladener und kraftvoller als „Moonshine Carnival“ oder?

Mono: Unser neues Album hat eben mehr Punk, Noise und Geschrei, weil wir einfach Lust dazu hatten. Oder weil wir wütend sind… Wütend!

4. Wenn man euch hört, denkt man an eine 70er Rockband aus den USA oder Amerika. Ehrt euch der Vergleich?

Mono: Ja, wir mögen diese Bands ja auch alle sehr. Wir hatten aber nie die Idee uns stilistisch konkret irgendwo anzulehnen. Uns ist die Verwandtschaft ebenfalls aufgefallen, aber wir entschlossen uns nichts dagegen zu tun.

5. Wie kommt man auf die Idee, 70er Jahre Rock mit Grunge, Heavy und Punk zu mixen?

Mono: Ja ich finde den Vergleich mit den 70er Jahren ein wenig nervig. Muss man uns denn unbedingt irgendwie in Schubladen stecken? Beim Songschreiben hatten wir nie die Idee so etwas bewusst zu mischen. Wir haben einfach gespielt und versucht Songs zu schreiben die uns allen gefallen, die nicht bald verfallen und in den Ohrmuschis widerhallen. Wir sehen unsere Musik eher wie eine Form von akustischem Arschtritt, als eine Mischung unterschiedlicher Stilrichtungen.

6. Mono Mojo, soll Midnight Deadbeats weiterhin erstmal ein Projekt bleiben oder hat euer Trio es nicht verdient, als Band gesehen zu werden?

Mono: Die Antwort auf diese Frage lautet: 42. Nein, Midnight Deadbeats ist eine feine Band, der Rest der Welt ist für mich nur ein Projekt.

7. Wo kann man euch dieses Jahr live erleben?

Mono: Ha, einfache Frage. An unseren Konzerten natürlich. Komm doch auch mal vorbei, wir tun dich auf die Gästeliste und du kriegst 1 Bier. Danke fürs Interview

About the Album

Congratulations on the new album „Dance til‘ you die“. Like the previous album, this one also reflects the sound of 70s rock. Is that what you wanted?

Thanks, we’re glad that everything always worked out. The song „Let the Heads roll“ was more of an oldie rock piece from the start. Otherwise, I think our second album is a lot harder, meaner and more modern than the debut.

How did the process for the new album go? Are you satisfied?

We recorded the instruments at Marc’s in his rabbit hutch (Hutch Studio Oberwil). That was fun because he’s good at it and we practiced. I then recorded the vocals in our rehearsal room while it was wet. I accidentally set the „project sample rate“ wrong and had to shout everything a second time. In a higher vocal range. Ouch.

Overall, „Dance til‘ you die“ seems more energetic and powerful than „Moonshine Carnival“, right?

Our new album has more punk, noise and screaming because we just felt like it. Or because we’re angry… Angry!

Additional Questions

When you hear you, you think of a 70s rock band from the USA or America. Do you like the comparison?

Yes, we all like this band very much. But we never had the idea of leaning on anything specific stylistically. We also noticed the similarity, but we decided not to do anything about it.

How did you come up with the idea of mixing 70s rock with grunge, heavy and punk?

Yes, I find the comparison with the 70s a little annoying. Do we really have to be pigeonholed in some way? When writing songs, we never had the idea of consciously mixing things like that. We just played and tried to write songs that we all liked, that wouldn’t quickly become obsolete and echo in our ears. We see our music more as a form of acoustic ass-kicking than a mixture of different styles.

Mono Mojo, should Midnight Deadbeats remain a project for now or does your trio not deserve to be seen as a band?

The answer to that question is: 42. No, Midnight Deadbeats is a fine band, the rest of the world is just a project for me.
