Sechzehn Jahre und fünf Alben nach Beginn der Karriere der Band aus Pennsylvania legen die Progressive – Death-Metal-Urläufer Rivers of Nihil mit dem selbstbetitelten Album „Rivers of Nihil“ noch einen drauf. Traditionell kann eine selbstbetitelte Platte eine Rückkehr zu den Grundlagen und/oder einen Neuanfang signalisieren, und in 10 kraftvollen Songs wird deutlich, dass diese beiden Faktoren eine Rolle spielen. Gründungsbassist Adam Biggs wurde 2023 neuer Leadsänger/Bassist der Band; im selben Jahr trat der zusätzliche Gitarrist Andy Thomas (ex-Black Crown Initiate) auf, dessen Gesang auch auf „Rivers of Nihil“ eine wichtige Rolle spielt.

Rivers‘ fünftes Metal Blade-Album „verdient die ’selbstbetitelte‘ Behandlung. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass diese Songs die perfekte Mischung aus all unseren Alben sind, wobei all das Fett weggeschnitten wurde“, sagt Gründungsmitglied und Gitarrist Brody Uttley. „Es gibt technischere Songs, die an The Conscious Seed of Light und den Monarchy-Sound erinnern, aber mit einem reiferen Verständnis dafür, wie man einen Song taktet. Es gibt ein gutes Stück experimentelles Zeug von den Owls und The Work, aber mit einer frischeren Perspektive auf diese Stile für die aktuelle Ära der Band.“ Die Produzenten Carson Slovak und Grant McFarland von Atrium Audio haben die Dynamik in mehr als 50 Minuten Musik eingefangen und damit klanglich die Entstehung der neuen Ära der Band markiert.

Die erste Single des neuen Albums im Jahr 2025, „House of Light“, ist ein Track, von dem die Band glaubt, dass er „die Natur dessen, was wir tun, perfekt einfängt und gleichzeitig eine andere Perspektive auf den Sound mit der neuen Besetzung bietet“, sagt Uttley, der auch Klavier spielt und in der Band programmiert. „Alles, was unsere Fans an unserem Sound lieben gelernt haben, wird in diesem Song mit dem neuen Gesang von Andy und Biggs als Hauptgesang demonstriert. Es hat die Riffs, es hat den großen Refrain, es hat den Prog, es hat die Soli, es hat das Saxophon. Nur ein klassisches Beispiel dafür, was wir als Band im Jahr 2025 tun.“

„Rivers of Nihil“ wurde in einer sehr „Rock’n’Roll“-Manier erstellt.“ Auf „The Work“ von 2021 habe ich einen Großteil des Albums auf dem Klavier geschrieben und dann hat die Band die Lücken gefüllt, aber auf dieser neuen Platte wollte ich sicherstellen, dass das Zeug live nur mit uns vier hart einschlägt, bevor ich all den funkelnden zusätzlichen „Zuckerguss“ hinzufüge.“, erklärt Uttley.

„Die Inspiration für das Cover-Artwork für dieses Album offenbarte sich langsamer als bei unseren letzten Versuchen. Mr. Seagrave und ich hatten eine Menge Hin und Her darüber, wie das Cover aussehen sollte. Anfangs hatte ich die grundlegende Vision einer Art Engelsgestalt, die die umgebende Dunkelheit verdrängt. Ich dachte, es wäre vielleicht interessant zu sehen, was er tun könnte, um dieser Dunkelheit auf seine eigene Art und Weise Details hinzuzufügen. Aber irgendwann ging es viel mehr um die Figur selbst.
Wir konzentrierten uns auf die populären Beschreibungen und künstlerischen Darstellungen des „biblisch korrekten“ Engels sowie auf die Teile der Schrift, aus denen sie stammen. „Fürchte dich nicht“, bittet der Cherubim sein Publikum, als er sich in all seiner bewusstseinsverändernden Jenseitigkeit präsentiert. Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass dies ein passendes Faksimile des Gesamtthemas des Albums war – eine Suche nach Wahrheit und Güte im Angesicht von sehr tiefer Angst und Paranoia.“ – Adam

Sixteen years and five albums into the Pennsylvania band’s career, progressive death metal progenitors Rivers of Nihil are upping the ante with the self-titled album Rivers of Nihil. Traditionally, a self-titled record can signal a return to basics and/or a fresh beginning, and in 10 powerful songs, it’s clear that both those factors are in play. Founding bassist Adam Biggs became the band’s new lead vocalist/bassist in 2023; the same year marked the appearance of additional guitarist Andy Thomas (ex-Black Crown Initiate), whose vocals also play prominently on Rivers of Nihil.

Rivers‚ fifth Metal Blade album „deserves the ’self-titled‘ treatment. I feel like these songs are the perfect blend of all our albums, with all the fat cut away,“ says founding member/guitarist Brody Uttley. „There are more technical songs that call back to The Conscious Seed of Light and Monarchy sound, but with a more mature understanding of how to pace a song. There’s a fair bit of the Owls and The Work-type experimental stuff, but with a more refreshed perspective on those styles for the current era of the band.“ Producers Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland at Atrium Audio captured the dynamics across more than 50 minutes of music, sonically marking the genesis of the band’s new era.

The new album’s first single of 2025, „House of Light“ (out Feb. 6, 2025) is a track the band believes „encapsulates the nature of what it is that we do perfectly while offering a different perspective on the sound with the new lineup,“ says Uttley, who also plays piano and does the programming in the band. „Everything that our fans have come to love about our sound is demonstrated in this song with the new addition of Andy singing and Biggs on main vocals. It has the riffs, it has the big chorus, it has the prog, it has the solos, it has the sax. Just a classic example of what we do as a band in 2025.“

Rivers of Nihil was created in a very „rock n‘ roll“ manner.“On 2021’s The Work I wrote a lot of the record on the piano and then the band filled in the gaps, but on this new record I wanted to make sure that this stuff would hit hard live with just the four of us before adding in all of the sparkly auxiliary ‚frosting‘ on top,“ explains Uttley.

The inspiration for the cover art for this record revealed itself more slowly than our past few efforts. Mr. Seagrave and myself had a lot of back and forth going on about what we wanted the cover to be. Initially, I had the basic vision of some sort of angelic figure pushing away the surrounding darkness. I thought it might be interesting to see what he could do to add detail to that darkness in his own signature way. But eventually it became much more about the figure itself. We focused on the popular descriptions and artistic representations of the “biblically accurate” angel, as well as the bits of scripture from which they originate. “Be not afraid” the cherubim asks of its audience as it presents itself in all of its mind-bending other-worldliness. I felt this was an appropriate facsimile of the overall theme of the record – a search for truth and goodness in the face of very deep fear and paranoia. -Adam
