Die Testimony Records kündigt stolz das neue Album der amerikanischen Death-Metal-Fanatiker Bonginator, „Retrodeath“, an, das am 24. Oktober 2025 in allen Formaten veröffentlicht wird.
Die Band kommentiert: „COWABUNGA BIATCH! Das hier ist unser gerechter neuer Kracher, am besten zu genießen mit Bonginator’s Lieblingsmahlzeit, Pizza! Denk daran – Mädels stehen auf Typen, die essen gehen! Bei diesem hier ist unsere Metalität über jeden Maßstab hinaus! Das ist ein bodenloser Rave für Bong-Rips und Stage-Diving. Sag nur nicht Master Splinter von dem erstklassigen Kush, das wir haben, okay? Wie auch immer, streamt das hier und wenn es jemandem nicht gefällt… was zum Teufel?“
Bang, boom, Bonginator! Der Wahnsinn herrscht auf dem zweiten Album der Band: „Retrodeath“ markiert die Geburt eines neuen Sounds, nicht nur für die Band, sondern auch für das Genre. Die grassfressenden Jugendlichen haben tatsächlich viel Arbeit in ihre neuen Songs gesteckt. Nun, wenn man es als ‚Arbeit‘ bezeichnet, monatelang in Action- und Horrorfilme der 80er einzutauchen sowie jede Menge alte Videospiele zu spielen…
Dann wiederum wurden weitere Tage damit verbracht, die genauen Synthesizer zu erforschen und nachzuahmen, die in den 80ern verwendet wurden, um einige ihrer Lieblingssoundtracks zu erstellen. Das Ergebnis ist ein frisches und irgendwie fröhlich verrücktes Klangmonster, das von Bonginator sorgfältig gezüchtet wurde, indem er traditionellen US-Death-Metal, Synthwave und 16-Bit-Computerspiele-Sounds selektiv kreuzte.
Das kommt kaum überraschend, da Bonginator Teil einer neuen Welle junger Death-Metal-Enthusiasten sind, die die altbewährten Werte des Stils schätzen, aber einen frischen Ansatz hinzufügen. Das könnte bei denen einen Herzinfarkt auslösen, die denken, dass das Genre nach 1986 viel zu aufgeschlossen wurde, aber Bonginator lassen sich am besten als das fehlende Glied zwischen den guten alten Zeiten und dem Death Metal hier und jetzt beschreiben.
Als der Sänger und Gitarrist Erik Thorstenn 2021 seine Liebe zum Death Metal und zu Gras in die Gründung von Bonginator channelte, war das nicht als Herausforderer für etablierte Bands wie CANNABIS CORPSE und WEEDEATER gedacht. Die Band aus dem Bundesstaat Massachusetts hatte bereits eine klare Vision, um ihren eigenen musikalischen Anspruch zu formulieren.
Die konzeptionelle Idee hinter der verrückten Welt von Bonginator schien sehr stark um eine Gruppe von Stoner-Kids zu kreisen, die es mit einer Horde blutrünstiger Aliens aufnehmen und dann einen intergalaktischen Roadtrip zu den dunkelsten Ecken des Universums unternehmen. Um ihr Ziel zu erreichen, rüsteten sie sich mit Kettensägen-Riffs, einem donnernden Schlagzeug-Barrage und unheimlichen Growls. Bonginator begab sich auf ihren Kreuzzug, um die Ohren der Headbanger auf der ganzen Welt mit der Debüt-EP ‚The 1986 Doink City Massacre‘ (2022) und ihrem ersten Full-Length ‚The Intergalactic Gorebong of Deathpot‘ (2023) zurückzuerobern.
Entgegen dem Bild von Freunden von Gras und Death Metal, die als faule Couch-Potatoes enden, machte sich Bonginator schnell auf die Straßen und durchquerte die Vereinigten Staaten in einem umgebauten gelben Schulbus, um jede Bühne zu erobern, die sie auf ihrer Reise haben wollte. Sie richteten sogar ihr eigenes Festival aus, das New England Death Metal Fun Time Bonanza.

Bang, boom, BONGINATOR! Madness reigns supreme on the band’s sophomore full-length: „Retrodeath“ marks the birth of a new sound, not just for the band but also for the genre. The weed-devouring youngsters have actually put a lot of work into their new songs. Well, if you call immersing yourself for months into ’80s action and horror movies as well as playing loads of old video games… ‚work‘.
Then again, more days were spent researching and emulating the exact synths used in the ’80s to create some of their favorite soundtracks. The result is a fresh and somewhat happily unhinged sonic monster that has been carefully bred by BONGINATOR selectively crossing traditional US death metal, synthwave, and 16-bit computer game sounds
This comes hardly as a surprise as BONGINATOR are part of a new wave of young death metal aficionados that embrace the style’s old school values but add a fresh approach. This might cause a heart attack with those who think that the genre became far too open-minded after 1986, but BONGINATOR are best described as the missing link between the good old days and death metal in the here and now.
When vocalist and guitarist Erik Thorstenn channelled his love for death metal and weed into the creation of BONGINATOR in 2021, it was not intended as a challenger to incumbents such as CANNABIS CORPSE and WEEDEATER. The band from the New England state of Massachusetts already had a clear vision to carve out their own musical claim.
The conceptual idea behind the crazy world of BONGINATOR appeared very much to revolve around a bunch of stoner kids taking on a horde of blood-thirsty aliens and then embarking on an intergalactic road trip to the darkest corners of the universe. To reach their goal, they weaponised chainsaw-riffing, a thunderous barrage of drums, and inhuman growls. BONGINATOR embarked on their crusade to reconquer the ears of headbangers around the globe with the debut EP „The 1986 Doink City Massacre“ (2022) and their first full-length „The Intergalactic Gorebong of Deathpot“ (2023).
Contrary to the image of friends of weed and death metal ending up as lazy couch potatoes, BONGINATOR quickly took to the roads and criss-crossed the United States in a converted yellow school bus to conquer every stage that would have them along their trip. They even set up their own festival, The New England Death Metal Fun Time Bonanza.
