Könnt ihr euch bitte kurz vorstellen? 

Hallo und vielen Dank für die Einladung. Wir sind Hardraw aus Zypern und dies ist unser 2. Album, das über Pirch Black Records erscheint. Hardraw gibt es seit 2005 (ex Ablaze) und die aktuelle Besetzung (und hoffentlich die letzte) besteht aus Jimmy Mavromatis (auch Mirror, Armagedon rev:1616) am Gesang, Nikolas “Sprits” Moutafis (auch Solitary Sabred, Mirror, Friends of Hell, March to Die) und Andreas Kyriacou (ebenfalls Receiver) an den Gitarren, Adamos Adamou (Ex-Gitarrist bei R.U.S.T.) am Bass und Vangelis Moutafis (ebenfalls Dragonbreath) am Schlagzeug. 

Seit den Anfängen eurer Band gab es einige Umstrukturierungen. Wie schwierig ist es, geeignete Musiker zu finden? 

In unserem Fall bestand die Schwierigkeit nicht darin, die geeigneten Musiker zu finden, sondern darin, Musiker zu finden, die dabei sein konnten und in der Lage waren, gemeinsam zu proben und zu kreieren. Zum Beispiel lebt unser ehemaliger Schlagzeuger Giannis jetzt in Spanien und unser ehemaliger Sänger Fedon in Griechenland, während er jedes Jahr 6 Monate auf Kreuzfahrtschiffen als Musiker arbeitet. Da es dadurch wirklich schwierig sein würde, zu proben, aufzutreten und damit zu arbeiten, haben wir uns in den letzten 3 Jahren endlich mit der aktuellen Besetzung arrangiert. 

Ihr habt kürzlich das Label geändert. Wie kam es zu dieser Entscheidung und wie habt ihr euch gefunden? 

Unser ehemaliges Label gibt es im Grunde nicht mehr. Es war das Label unseres ehemaligen Bassisten Constantinos mit dem Namen “616 records”. Phivos ist ein Typ, den wir als Freund bezeichnen können, und da Pitch Black Records das einzige Heavy Metal Label in Zypern ist, hilft er uns oft mit verschiedenen Dingen, die wir brauchen. Wir wissen auch, dass er ein echter Profi ist und mit Releases umgehen und sie so weit pushen kann, wie er kann. Also habe ich mich persönlich mit Phivos in Verbindung gesetzt und ihm das Album zusammen mit dem Cover geschickt. Nachdem er es sich angehört hatte, rief er mich ein paar Tage später an und teilte mir mit, das er gerne damit fortfahren würde. 

Über das Album

Ich fange mit dem letzten Song an, den er einen besonderen Hintergrund hat. Ihr habt ihn Mark “The Shark” Shelton gewidmet. Kannst du uns ein wenig über die Entstehungsgeschichte und die Emotionen erzählen, die dich dazu bewogen haben? 

Als “Shark” starb, waren wir alle sehr emotional. Ich selbst wollte mir “Manilla Road” nicht anhören, weil ich wusste, dass es mir das Herz brechen würde. Ich kannte Shark nicht sehr gut, aber wir trafen uns ein paar Mal und da wir “Manilla Road” auf dem Power of the Night Festival präsentiert hatten, gab es die Chance uns zu treffen. Der Tag, an dem er starb, war eine weitere Ausgabe des Power of the Night Festivals, und da wir zu den Organisatoren gehörten, hatten wir nicht die Zeit, wirklich zu verstehen, das es die Wahrheit war. Einige Wochen später trat ich mit einer anderen Band in Ayia Napa auf und saß am Pool des Hotels, um zu trinken, und ich beschloss, dass es an der Zeit war, darüber hinwegzukommen und wieder “Manilla Road” zu hören. Das war die Zeit, in der der Song entstand.

Ich möchte nur die Tatsache betonen, dass wir alle dies mit großem Respekt getan haben, ohne seinen Tod ausnutzen zu wollen oder einen Song zu haben, von dem wir nicht glauben würden, dass er als Hommage funktioniert. (Während ich dies schreibe, probt mein 10-jähriger Sohn “Flaming Metal Systems” für den Auftritt beim bevorstehenden Open the Gates Festival bei dem Tribute, den wir vorbereiten). 

Gianni Nepi und Harry “The Tyrant” Conklin sind keine Unbekannten – warum habt ihr euch entschieden, mit ihnen zu arbeiten? 

Gianni Nepi ist ein alter Freund geworden, seit wir Dark Quarterer auf Zypern hatten, und ich kann euch sagen, dass er ein edler und respektvoller Kerl ist. Dark Quarterer haben bisher 3 Mal auf Zypern gespielt, aber wir treffen uns auch, wenn wir nach Übersee zu einem Festival oder einem Konzert fahren. Ich wusste, dass diese Stimme den Song ergänzen würde, und die Dinge, die er in dem Song tat, ließen mich erschauern. Harry “the Tyrant” Conklin ist ebenfalls einzigartig und hat eine riesige Metal-Stimme. Wir alle lieben seine Stimme und wir glaubten, dass er kraftvolle Vocals hinzufügen würde. Und wie erwartet, tat er es auch. 

Ist es dir wichtig, mit deiner Musik eine Geschichte zu erzählen, oder liegt der Fokus auf dem Können der Instrumente? 

Es ist natürlich wichtig, eine Geschichte zu erzählen, denn eigentlich erzählen alle unsere Songs eine Geschichte. Einige haben mit historischen Ereignissen zu tun, andere mit persönlichen Erlebnissen und so weiter. Auf der anderen Seite gibt es die Musik, die auch ein wichtiger Aspekt ist, also versuchen wir, dass die Musik die Texte ergänzt und umgekehrt. 

Euer Musikstil ist Oldschool Heavy Metal ohne dieses bleierne, monotone Geduddel. Du schaffst es, eine Leichtigkeit und einen Hauch von Symphonik einzumischen. Wer hatte die Idee oder ist sie einfach gewachsen? 

Ich glaube, es war eine natürliche Entwicklung der Band. Das erste Album war etwas geradliniger, aber es gab auch die Melodien und die doppelten Gitarrenparts. Was dabei herauskommt, ist etwas, das unbeabsichtigt passiert, ohne zu “versuchen”, etwas zu komponieren, das so oder so klingt. Wir mögen es, unserem Herzen zu folgen und vor allem lieben wir unsere Songs, also keine Filler oder Songs, die nicht gut für unsere Ohren sind. Eine weitere Sache, die hilft, ist, dass alle Mitglieder in anderen Bands spielen oder gespielt haben, so dass die Musik, die neben anderen Kompositionen für Hardraw ausgewählt wurde, am besten passt. 

Was meinst du persönlich mit “Abgrund der Menschheit”? 

“The Abyss Of Mankind” bezieht sich darauf, wie wir als Menschheit im Laufe der Geschichte dazu neigen, die gleichen tragischen Fehler zu wiederholen. Er verweist auch auf die Abweichung einiger führender Personen, die in ihrer Macht leider durch ihre Handlungen Menschenleben und schwächere Länder ausbeuten und ihre engstirnige Agenda fördern. 

Fragen aus Neugier

Auf welchen Konzerten / Festivals warst du/Ihr in letzter Zeit als Besucher? 

Vor kurzem war ich auf dem Up the Hammers Festival, wo ich jedes Jahr versuche, eine griechische Band namens “Anorimoi” zu besuchen, und auf einem Konzert, das wir zusammen mit Arrayan Path und Mirror gespielt haben. In Zypern haben wir in den letzten Jahren Konzerte mit Bands aus dem Ausland gegeben, wobei NSM Productions ihr Bestes gegeben hat. Das nächste ist natürlich das Open the Gates Festival II. 

Mit welchen Künstlern / Bands würdet ihr gerne arbeiten? 

Es gibt zahlreiche Bands, mit denen wir gerne spielen würden, zahlreiche Bands, mit denen wir nicht mehr spielen können und zahlreiche Bands, mit denen wir das Glück hatten zu spielen. Einige von denen, mit denen wir gerne spielen würden, aber noch nicht gespielt haben, sind Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Manowar, Saxon, Arch/Matheos, Liege Lord und viele, viele mehr.  

Erinnerst du dich: Was war dein erstes Album? (Welches du gekauft hast)

Mein erstes Album, das ich mir gekauft habe, war “Load” von Metallica im Alter von 8 Jahren. Ich erinnere mich an einen Plattenladen, der in der neuen “Mall” in Limassol eröffnet wurde, und ich kaufte die Kassette. Lustige Geschichte dazu, zu der Zeit ging ich samstags in die Kirchenschule und sie gaben uns ein paar Heiligenbilder, die lustigerweise genau in die Kassettenhülle passten. Ich legte es dort hin und brachte es zu meiner Tante und sagte, sie hätten es uns in der Kirchenschule gegeben und es enthalte Kirchenlieder🤣😂 Sobald sie auf Play drückte, nahm sie es ab, schrie “Das ist der Teufel” und warf es aus dem Fenster. Natürlich bin ich rausgegangen und habe es abgeholt. Hahaha!

Intro

Could you please introduce yourselves? 

Hello Davide. Thanks for having us. We are Hardraw from Cyprus and this is our 2nd album, coming out via Pirch Black Records. Hardraw exist since 2005 (ex Ablaze) and the current lineup (and hopefully the last) is Jimmy Mavromatis (also Mirror, Armagedon rev:1616) on vocals, Nikolas “Sprits” Moutafis (also Solitary Sabred, Mirror, Friends of Hell, March to Die) and Andreas Kyriacou (also Receiver) on guitars, Adamos Adamou (ex guitars at R.U.S.T.) on bass and Vangelis Moutafis (also Dragonbreath) on drums. 
Since the beginning of your band there have been some restructurings.

How difficult is it to find suitable musicians? 

In our case, the difficulty was not on finding the suitable musicians but to find musicians who could be there and be able to rehearse and create all together. For instance, our former drummer Giannis now lives in Spain and our former singer Fedon lives in Greece, while he works 6 months every year on cruise ships as a musician. Since this would make it really hard to rehearse, perform and work with, we finally settled down for the last 3 years to the current lineup. 
 
You recently changed the label. How did this decision come about and how did you find each other? 

Our former label basically no longer exists. It was the label of our former bassist Constantinos named “616 records”. Phivos is a guy we can call friend and as Pitch Black Records is the only Heavy metal label in Cyprus, he often helps us with several stuff we need. We also know that he is a real professional and can handle releases and push them as much as he can. So I personally contacted Phivos and sent him the album along with the cover. After listening to it he called me a few days later and letting me know that he would love to proceed with it. 

About the Album

I’ll start with the last track, which he has a special background. You dedicated it to Mark “The Shark” Shelton. Can you tell us a little bit about the genesis and emotions that moved you to do this? 

When “Shark” died, we all were very emotional. I, myself, didn’t want to listen to Manilla Road because I knew it would break my heart. I didn’t know Shark very well but we met a few times and since we had Manilla Road at Power of the Night Festival, we got the chance to meet. The day he died was another edition of “Power of the Night festival” and since we were among the organizers, we didn’t have the time to really understand that it was truth. Several weeks later, I was performing with another band in Ayia Napa and was at the hotel’s pool drinking and I decided it was about time to get over it and listen to Manilla Road again. That was the time when the song was created.

I just want to stress the fact that we all did this with huge respect without wanting either to take advantage of his death nor having a song that we wouldn’t think works as a Tribute. (as I am writing this now, my 10 years old son is rehearsing Flaming Metal Systems to perform at the upcoming Open the Gates Festival at the Tribute we are preparing). 

Gianni Nepi and Harry “The Tyrant” Conklin are no strangers – why did you decide to work with them?

Gianni Nepi became an old friend since we had Dark Quarterer in Cyprus and let me tell you he is a noble and respectful guy. Dark Quarterer played 3 times in Cyprus so far but we also meet when we go overseas to a festival or a concert. I knew that that voice would compliment the song and the things he did in the song gave me the chills. Harry “the Tyrant” Conklin is also one of a kind and a huge metal voice. We all love his voice and we believed that he would add powerful vocals. So, as expected, he did. 

Is it important to you to tell a story with your music, or is the focus on the skill on the instrument? 

It, for sure, is important to tell a story, as a matter of fact all our songs tell a story. Some have to do with historical events, some with personal experiences and so on. On the other hand, there is the music, which is also a major aspect, so what we are trying to do is have the music complimenting the lyrics and vice versa. 

Your style of music is oldschool heavy metal without this leaden monotonous doodling. You manage to mix in a lightness and a touch of symphonic. Who came up with the idea or did it just grow? 

I believe it was a natural evolution of the band. The first album was a little bit more straight forward but there were also the melodies and the double guitar parts. What comes out is something happening unintentionally, without “trying” to compose something that sounds like this or like that. We like to follow our heart and mostly we like to love our songs, so no fillers nor songs that are not great to our ears. One more thing that helps is that all the members play, or used to play in other bands, so the music picked for Hardraw among other compositions, is what suits best for. 

What do you personally mean by “Abyss of mankind”? 

The Abyss of Mankind refers on how as a Mankind through history we tend to repeat the same tragic mistakes. It also makes reference to the deviance of some of the leading people, who in their power unfortunately through their actions are exploiting human lives, weaker countries and promote their narrow-minded agenda. 

Questions out of curiosity 

Which concerts / festivals have you been to as a visitor lately? 
I recently have been at Up the Hammers Festival, where I try to go every year, a Greek band called “Anorimoi” and to a concert we played along with Arrayan Path and Mirror. In Cyprus, just the past few years we are having concerts with bands from abroad, with NSM Productions trying their best. The next one of course is Open the Gates Festival II. 

Which artists / bands would you like to play with? 

There are numerous bands that we would love to play with, numerous bands that we cannot play with anymore and numerous bands that we had the fortune to play with. Some of the ones we would love to play with and haven’t, are Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Manowar, Saxon, Arch/Matheos, Liege Lord and many, many more.  

Remember: what was your first album? 

My first album ever bought was “Load” by Metallica at the age of 8. I remember a record shop opened at the new ‘mall’ in Limassol and I bought the cassette. Funny story with that, at the time I was going to church school on Saturdays and they were giving us some saint pictures which funnily enough fitted exactly inside the tape case. I put it there and got it to my aunt saying they gave it to us at church school and contains Hymns🤣😂
As soon as she pressed play she took it off shouting “this is the Devil” and threw it out the window. Of course I went out and picked it up. Hahaha!
