Könnt ihr euch bitte kurz vorstellen?
Hallo, wir sind Painted Scars. Eine Heavy Hardrock Band aus Belgien. Im Moment sind wir vier Leute (eine Sängerin Jassy „Hyacien“ Blue, 2 Gitarristen Yannick Rottiers und Toon Delaruelle und ein Bassist Jens Van Geel). Wir wohnen alle in der Nähe von Gent. Bald werden wir nach einem neuen Schlagzeuger suchen. Im Moment arbeiten wir mit Session-Schlagzeugern, um die Shows und die Musik am Leben zu erhalten.
Wie kamt ihr dazu, Musik zusammen zu machen?
Das ist ganz einfach. Wir alle lieben das Genre und die Kraft, die wir in die Musik stecken können, also passt es. Außerdem nehmen wir diese Band sehr ernst. Wir sind alle sehr ehrgeizig.
Welcher musikalischen Vorbilder dienten euch dabei?
Unsere Sängerin lässt sich von der Band Halestorm inspirieren. Sie ist ein großer Fan von Lzzy Hale. Weiter haben wir einige Einflüsse von Slash, Shinedown oder Airbourne.
Mit der neuen Musik wollen wir immer noch im Halestorm-Vibe bleiben, aber wir wollen auch mehr in Richtung Avenged Sevenfold oder Alter Bridge gehen. Wir werden sehen. 🙂
Über das Debüt
Bald die erste EP in der Tasche und die zweite Auflage vom „Scarfest“ steht an – ziemlich fleißig für so eine neue Band wie euch!
Ja, das kann man wohl sagen 🙂 Das letzte Jahr war wahnsinnig arbeitsreich für uns. Das erste Mal im Studio, der erste Videoclip, die EP-Veröffentlichung, zweites Scarfest, zweiter Platz beim Wacken-Finale usw. Es ging alles ging so schnell. Dieses Jahr werden wir aufgrund der Umstände – fehlender Drummer – weniger Shows spielen. Und für jede Show müssen wir einen Sessiondrummer bezahlen, leider.
Aber wir werden natürlich nicht stillsitzen. Im Moment schreiben wir eine Menge Songs
und wir hoffen, dass wir dieses Jahr eine weitere Single veröffentlichen können. Aber das ist alles noch eine Überraschung 😉
Wir sind auch damit beschäftigt, eine Menge Inhalte und Designs für neues Merch zu erstellen, ganz alleine. Wir können es nicht erwarten, das alles zu veröffentlichen! Aber alles mit der Zeit, würde ich sagen.
Erzählt uns mehr von „Kintsugi“. Wie verlief der Aufnahmeprozess, was zeichnet die Scheibe aus und was gefällt euch besonders daran?
Das Wort „Kintsugi“ beschreibt, wie Narben (geistig oder körperlich) eine Person schöner machen können. Die Menschen, die am Meisten ertragen und gelitten haben, sind meist am freundlichsten zu anderen. Kintsugi“ ist ein japanischer Begriff, der zerbrochene Töpferwaren mit goldenem Leim fixiert, um sie schöner zu machen.
In all unseren Songs auf der EP gibt es diese traurigen Texte oder Texte mit einer dunklen Geschichte, die wir mit positiven Vibes in der Musik und der Melodie versehen. Just Liquid Gold z.B. hat keinen traurigen Text, sondern handelt davon, das nicht immer alles schlecht sein muss. Nimm einfach ein Glas eiskaltes Bier und genieße jeden Schluck davon. Ihr wisst schon, die kleinen Dinge im Leben genießen!
Lässt sich die Promo für die EP und die Vorbereitung fürs Scarfest gut unter einem Hut bringen?
Nein, ganz und gar nicht! Wir mussten uns sehr auf die EP und die Promo konzentrieren. Wir hatten einen Plan ausgearbeitet mit Fristen etc. In der Zwischenzeit sind wir mit den Vorbereitungen für das Festival beschäftigt und versuchen dass es so gut wie möglich funktioniert. Yannick, unser Gitarrist, hat die meiste Verantwortung für das Scarfest auf sich genommen und natürlich hatten wir auch ein wenig Hilfe von einigen Leuten aus unserem Umfeld. Nach dem Scarfest haben wir gemerkt, dass das alles ein bisschen zu viel war. Wir haben gelernt in Zukunft anders zu arbeiten, damit es sich manifestiert und wir es besser machen.
Hardrock und Frauengesang verbindet man mit Doro Pesch oder Warlock. Ehrt euch ein Vergleich?
Ja, natürlich! Doro ist DIE erste Frau in der Hardrock- und Heavy-Metal-Szene. Das ist eine

Fragen aus Neugier
Wie kamt ihr dazu euch für Hardrock zu entscheiden?
Hardrock ist fantastisch! 🙂 Erstens lieben wir ihn wirklich und zweitens ist das Publikum größer. Wir hatten schon Leute, die nicht wirklich Rock oder Metal hören, haben sich unsere EP angehört und meinten: Oh, okay, ich liebe das! Ihr könnt mit eurer Musik eine Menge Leute erreichen, Rock ist mehr Mainstream und das ist erstaunlich. Mit Rock kann man eine Menge erreichen. In Belgien haben wir das Gefühl, dass „Rock“ ein bisschen tot ist.
Und wir hoffen einfach, dass er ein Comeback feiert!

Intro
Could you please introduce yourselves briefly?
Hello, we are Painted Scars. A heavy hardrock band from Belgium. For now we are with four people (a singer: Jassy ‘Hyacien’ Blue, 2 guitarists: Yannick Rottiers and Toon Delaruelle and a bass player: Jens Van Geel). We all live near Ghent. Soon we’re going to look for a new drummer. For the moment we work with session drummers to keep the shows and music alive.
How did you come to make music together?
That’s simple. We all love the genre and the power we can put in the music so it’s the right fit. We also take this band really serious. We’re all very ambitious.
What musical role models did you draw on?
Our singer takes her inspiration from the band Halestorm. She’s a big fan of Lzzy Hale. Further we have some influences from Slash, Shinedown, Airborne,… With the new music we still want to stay in the Halestorm vibe but we also want to go more Avenged Sevenfold or Alter Bridge etc. We’ll see. 🙂
About the Debut
Soon the first EP in the bag and the second edition of “Scarfest” is coming up – pretty busy for a new band like you!
Yes! You can say that :p Last year was insanely busy for us. First time in the studio, first videoclip, the EP release, second time scarfest, second place on the Wacken finals etc. It all went so fast. This year, cause of circumstances we are going to do less shows for a reason (cause of the drummer we don’t have and we have to pay each show for a sessiondrummer so). But… we are definitely not going to sit still of course. As for now we are making and writing a lot of new music and we hope this year we can release another single. But that is all still a surprise 😉 We are also busy making a lot of content and designs for new merch, all by ourselves. Can’t wait to make this all public! But patience will serve I’d say.
Tell us more about “Kintsugi”. How did the recording process go, what characterizes the record and what do you particularly like about it?
The word ‘kintsugi’ describes how scars (mentally or physically) can make a person more beautiful. The people who endured the most and suffered the most are mostly the kindest to one and other. ‘Kintsugi’ is a Japanese term that fixes broken pottery with golden glue, to make them more beautiful.
In all our songs on the EP you have these sad lyrics or lyrics with a dark story that we combine with positive vibes in the music and the melody. Just Liquid Gold doesn’t have sad lyrics but also has a reference to: It doesn’t always have to be bad, just take a glass of ice cold beer and enjoy every sip of it. You know, the small things.
Is it easy to juggle the promo for the EP and the preparations for Scarfest?
Noooo not at all! We had to focus a lot on the EP and the promo. We had a plan all worked out with deadlines etc. In the meantime you are busy with the preparations for the festival and trying to make it work as well as possible. Yannick our guitarist took the most responsibility on him for Scarfest and of course we also had a little help from some people around us. After Scarfest we realised it was all a little too much and learned to work a little differently in the future so we can manifest and have time to do it better.
Hard rock and female vocals are associated with Doro Pesch or Warlock. Does a comparison honor you?
Yes of course! Doro is THE first woman in the hardrock and heavy metal scene. That is an honor!
Out of Curiosity
How did you come to choose hard rock?
Hard rock is amazing! :p First we really love it and second, your audience is bigger. We’ve had people who don’t really listen to rock or metal who listened to our EP and were like oh, okay I love that! You can reach a lot of people with your music, rock is more mainstream and that is amazing. You can do a lot with rock. In Belgium we have the feeling the ‘Rock’ is a little dead? And we just hope to give it a comeback!
