Könnt ihr euch bitte kurz vorstellen?
Sicherlich! Mark Sugar, Gesang/Gitarre (der Mann, der dieses Interview macht). Ryan Bruchert, Gitarre. Brandon White, Schlagzeug.
Wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt?
Wir kennen uns alle schon so lange, dass ich mich ehrlich gesagt nicht daran erinnere, wie ich einige dieser Jungs kennengelernt habe. Wir alle haben eine ziemlich lange Geschichte, was die Freundschaft angeht und wir sind Teil der Musikszene hier in Chicago. Wir machen das schon lange, haha.
Was treibt euch an Musik zu machen? Und was überwiegt: der Spaß am Musik machen oder damit erfolgreich zu sein?
Ich für meinen Teil fühle mich einfach gezwungen, Musik um ihrer selbst willen zu machen. So etwas wie „erfolgreich“ gibt es nicht, und ich werde nicht reich, indem ich semi-progressiven Metal spiele. Aber wenn ich Platten machen kann, die mir persönlich gefallen und mit denen ich zufrieden bin, dann reicht das für mich.
Über das Album
Als ich euer Album das erst Mal angehört habe, hatte ich das Gefühl, das da ein wenig die alten Iced Earth durchschimmern. (Da ich die sehr mag, ein sehr gutes Gefühl.) Kennt ihr diese Band?
Interessant! Natürlich habe ich die Band ein wenig gehört, aber ich kann nicht wirklich sagen, dass ich ein großer Iced Earth Fan bin. Aber wenn du sie magst, dann nehme ich den Vergleich als Kompliment, also vielen Dank.
Black Sites ist ein Begriff welcher vor allem mit CIA in Verbindung gebracht wird. War euch das bei der Namensgebung bekannt?
Ganz genau. In unserer Heimatstadt Chicago gibt es auch eine „Black Site“, die von der Polizei betrieben wird, und das war die Motivation, die Band zu benennen. Meiner Meinung nach steht „Black Sites“ gegen Unterdrückung und Ungerechtigkeit, und der Name erinnert daran.
Gibt es eine Geschichte hinter dem Album? Arbeitet ihr mit einem Konzept im Kopf oder kommt es wie es kommt?
Es ist kein Konzeptalbum, dafür habe ich nicht die Aufmerksamkeitsspanne. Aber ich versuche, ein Album einigermaßen zusammenhängend zu gestalten, was das Gefühl oder den lyrischen Ansatz angeht, und ich denke, diese 7 Songs tun genau das. Allerdings geht es in den Songs um 7 verschiedene Dinge, vielleicht auch mehr.
Seht ihr die “World On Fire”? Oder ist das eine Metapher und ich denke hier in eine falsche Richtung?
Es ist ein wenig metaphorisch, aber ja, es gibt sicherlich Zeiten, in denen ich es so sehe. Die letzten Jahre haben sich besonders dystopisch angefühlt, im Sinne von Mad Max oder Robocop, und das hat mich zu diesem Song inspiriert.
“Bei Dread Tomorrow” spielt ihr auf einen Krieg an, der nicht enden wird. Denkt ihr, das die Menschheit sich selbst vernichten wird, oder das am Ende die Vernunft siegen wird?
Oh, diese Fragen werden immer besser! Ich sage es mal so: Wenn „die Vernunft siegen wird“, dann wird sie nicht so bald siegen.
Was ist für euch das “Promised Land”?
Ich glaube nicht an diese Art von Dingen. Aber wenn ich Gitarre spiele oder mir einen billigen 80er-Jahre-Actionfilm ansehe, dann ist das vielleicht nahe genug.
Fragen aus Neugier
Wem wolltet ihr schon immer ein großes Danke sagen, für die Unterstützung bei eurer Arbeit?
Es gibt eine Handvoll Leute, die von Anfang an dabei sind, und das meine ich wörtlich, denn ich sehe ihre Namen auf Bandcamp-Bestellungen und in den sozialen Medien seit der ersten Platte im Jahr 2017. Ich bin sehr dankbar, dass diese Leute die ganze Zeit bei uns geblieben sind, durch all unsere Besetzungswechsel, Labelwechsel, musikalischen Veränderungen usw., und ich hoffe, wir haben ihre Geduld mit uns belohnt.
Mit wem würdet ihr gerne mal auf der Bühne / im Studio zusammenarbeiten?
Ich habe immer wieder Alpträume von der Produktion einer Metallica-Platte.
Geht ihr selber noch auf Konzerte / Festivals? Und wenn ja welche sind eure Favouriten?
Ich gehe immer noch zu Konzerten. Die Festival-Situation in den USA ist ein wenig anders, und ich gehe dort in der Regel nicht hin. Die Festivals in der EU sind allerdings großartig, und ich hoffe, dass ich bald wieder auf einige davon gehen kann. (Anm.d.Red. You are always welcome)

Intro
Could you please introduce yourselves briefly?
Certainly! Mark Sugar, vocals/guitar (the guy doing this interview). Ryan Bruchert, guitar. Brandon White, drums.
How did you get to know each other?
We’ve all known each other for so long that I honestly don’t remember how I met some of these guys. We all go pretty far back as far as being friends, and being part of the music scene here in Chicago. We’ve been doing this a long time, haha.
What drives you to make music? And what prevails: the fun of making music or being successful with it?
Speaking for myself, I just feel compelled to make music for its own sake. There’s no such thing as “successful,” and I’m not getting rich playing semi-progressive metal. But if I can make records that I personally like and feel satisfied with, that’s enough for me.
About The Album
When I listened to your album for the first time, I had the feeling that the old Iced Earth shone through a little. (Since I like them a lot, a very good feeling.) Do you know this band?
Interesting! Obviously I’ve heard the band a little, but I can’t really say I’m a huge Iced Earth fan. But if you like them, then I will take the comparison as a compliment, so thank you very much.
Black Sites is a term that is mainly associated with CIA. Were you aware of this when you chose the name?
Absolutely. There is also a “black site” in our hometown of Chicago, run by the police, and that was the motivation to name the band. In my mind, Black Sites stands against oppression and injustice, and the name is a reminder of that.
Is there a story behind the album? Do you work with a concept in mind or does it come as it comes?
It’s not a concept album, I don’t have the attention span for that. But I do try to have an album be somewhat cohesive as far as feel or lyrical approach, and I think these 7 songs do exactly that. However, the songs are about 7 different things, possibly more.
Do you see the ‘World On Fire’? Or is this a metaphor and I’m thinking in the wrong direction?
It’s somewhat metaphorical, but yes, there are certainly times where I see it that way. The last few years have felt particularly dystopian, in a Mad Max or Robocop sense, and that’s what inspired that song.
‘Dread Tomorrow’ alludes to a war that won’t end. Do you think that humanity will destroy itself or that reason will prevail in the end?
Oh, these questions are getting good! I’ll put it this way: if “reason will prevail,” it won’t be prevailing anytime soon.
What is the ‘Promised Land’ for you?
I’m not a believer in that sort of thing. But if I’m playing guitar, or watching some trashy ‘80s action movie, that’s maybe close enough.
Questions out of Curiosity
Who have you always wanted to say a big thank you to for their support in your work?
There are a handful of people who have been with us since the beginning, and I mean that literally because I’ve seen their names on Bandcamp orders and social media stuff since the first record back in 2017. I’m very grateful that those people have stuck with us this whole time, through all of our lineup changes, label changes, musical shifts, etc., and I hope we’ve rewarded their patience with us.
Who would you like to work with on stage / in the studio?
I have recurring nightmares of producing a Metallica record.
Do you still go to concerts / festivals yourself? And if so, which are your favourites?
I still go to shows. The festival situation in the US is a little different, and I generally don’t go to those. The fests in the EU are amazing though, and I hope to be back at some of those soon.
