Könnt ihr euch kurz vorstellen?
Hallo, wir sind Destroyers of All, eine Progressive Death/Thrash Metal Band aus Coimbra, Portugal.
Wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt?
Die Wurzeln der Band reichen bis ins Jahr 2011 zurück, als drei der aktuellen (und ursprünglichen) Mitglieder, die sich aus der Metalszene unserer Stadt kannten, beschlossen, gemeinsam an einem Projekt zu arbeiten. Vorher spielten sie noch in verschiedenen anderen Bands. Als Bruno und João zum endgültigen Line-up dazu stießen, wurde das Musikmachen zur Selbstverständlichkeit.
Wie kommt man dazu Progressive Metal mit Death, Thrash oder sogar Black Metal zu mischen?
Ich denke, das ist eine natürliche Folge der vielen verschiedenen Stile, die die Mitglieder bevorzugen. Einige hören Death Metal, andere Black oder Thrash, und sogar klassischen Heavy Metal und Hardrock der 70er/80er Jahre. Natürlich bringt jeder seine Einflüsse in die Musik von Destroyers of All ein und formt sie zu dem, was wir in jedem Werk präsentieren: Eklektizismus im Heavy Metal-Sound mit verrückten Hooks und Wendungen.
Über das Album
Die aktuelle Single „Ritual“ lässt schon mal aufhorchen – düsterer Okkultismus wird da besungen. Zieht sich das Thema durch das ganze Album?
Nicht ganz. Ich glaube, „Ritual“ ist der einzige Song auf diesem Album, der sich mit Okkultismus und Dunkelheit beschäftigt. Das ist ein Thema, mit dem wir uns schon immer gerne beschäftigt haben, und als wir mit der Arbeit an diesem Song begannen, passte es wirklich gut. Insgesamt erforschen wir auf diesem Album Themen wie Sucht, PTBS, die Auswirkungen von Alzheimer, das Gefühl von Verlust usw. Wir laden die Hörer dazu ein, die Texte zu lesen, denn wir glauben, dass sie wirklich helfen, die Identität dieses neuen Albums zu finden.
Es werden euch „grimmige Riffs“, „donnernde Drums“ und „harter Sound“ nachgesagt – ist das auch euer Empfinden?
Verdammt ja! Seit dem ersten Tag haben wir immer versucht, technisch zu sein, ohne die Härte in unserem Sound zu verlieren, und ich denke, das ist uns gelungen, besonders bei unseren Live-Shows.
In was unterscheidet sich „In Darkness We Remain“ von euren bisherigen Alben?
Es ist die Krönung von 13 Jahren als Band, und ich denke, dass wir auf unserer vierten Veröffentlichung wirklich alles, was wir bisher gemacht haben, vermischt und auf die nächste Ebene gebracht haben.
Ich könnte sagen, es ist eine Rückkehr zu den Wurzeln, wie bei der EP „Into the Fire“, aber ich glaube, dieses Album ist viel raffinierter und ausgefeilter. Wir sind sehr stolz auf diese neue Platte.
Welchen Song von der aktuellen Scheibe sollen sich unsere Leser/Leserinnen unbedingt anhören?
Es ist schwer, eine Auswahl zu treffen, da die Rückmeldungen zu den einzelnen Liedern sehr unterschiedlich waren, aber um einen Gesamteindruck des Albums zu bekommen, würde ich „Ritual“, „Closure“ und „Neurosis“ vorschlagen.
Fragen aus Neugier
Bisher seid ihr vorrangig im portugiesischen Raum zu hören. Soll sich das jetzt, auch mit dem neuen Album, ändern?
Ich denke, unsere Musik hat viele Teile der Welt erreicht, aber wenn es um Live-Auftritte geht, sind wir bisher nur in Spanien aufgetreten. Wir haben definitiv vor, unsere Reichweite zu vergrößern, und wir sind offen für Einladungen und Möglichkeiten. Mal sehen, was wir mit diesem neuen Album erreichen können.
Ihr durften auch schon mit Größen wie Destruction und Soulfly die Bühne teilen. Ist das eine besondere Ehre gewesen?
Oh Mann, was für eine Ehre. Im Jahr 2019, kurz vor der Pandemie, ging es für uns steil bergauf. Wir eröffneten für Soulfly hier in unserem Heimatland und trafen unser Idol Max Cavalera und seine wunderbare Familie. Nur zwei Tage später spielten wir auf der zweiten Bühne beim Resurrection Fest, direkt vor Testament. Wie du bereits erwähnt hast, hatten wir zuvor schon das Vergnügen, die Bühne mit Destruction, Crowbar und Anti-Nowhere League zu teilen. Wir sind sehr stolz darauf, bei diesen wirklich besonderen Shows aufgetreten zu sein.
Wenn man an Metal aus Portugal denkt, denkt man unweigerlich an Moonspell, die schon seit 18 Jahren im Metalbusiness sind. Was verbindet ihr mit Moonspell? Sind sie für euch ein Stück weit auch musikalische Vorbilder?
Moonspell sind zu Recht der größte Name im Heavy Metal unseres Landes, und darauf sind wir sehr stolz, denn wir alle hören sie, seit wir uns mit der extremeren Seite der Musik beschäftigt haben. Musikalisch haben wir vielleicht nicht viel gemeinsam, aber ihre Arbeitsmoral und die Art und Weise, wie sie den Namen Portugals in die Welt tragen, inspirieren uns wirklich.
Can you briefly introduce yourselves?
Hello, we are Destroyers of All, a Progressive Death/Thrash Metal band from Coimbra, Portugal.
How did you get to know each other?
The roots of the band go way back to 2011, when three of the current (and original) members, who knew each other from the metal scene in our city, decided to work together on a project, as all of them were playing in different bands at the time. From there, Bruno and João joined the final lineup, and creating music became quite natural.
How do you come to mix progressive metal with death, thrash, or even black metal?
I think it’s a natural consequence of the many different styles that the members prefer. Some listen to Death Metal, others to Black or Thrash, and even classical Heavy Metal and ’70s/’80s hard rock. Naturally, everyone brings their influences into Destroyers of All’s music, shaping it into what we present in each work: eclecticism in the Heavy Metal sound with crazy hooks and twists.
About the Album
The current single “Ritual” makes you sit up and take notice – it sings about dark occultism. Does this theme run through the whole album?
Not quite. I think „Ritual“ is the only song on this album that touches on themes of occultism and darkness. It’s a theme we have always liked to explore, and when we started working on this song, it really fit well. Overall, in this album, we explore themes such as addiction, PTSD, the effects of Alzheimer’s, the sentiment of loss, etc. We invite listeners to read the lyrics, as we believe they really help navigate the identity of this new album.
You are said to have “grim riffs,” “thundering drums,” and a “hard sound” – is that how you feel?
Hell yes! Since day one, we have always aimed to be technical without losing any heaviness in our sound, and I think we accomplished that, especially in our live shows.
How does „In Darkness We Remain“ differ from your previous albums?
It’s the culmination of 13 years as a band, and on our fourth release, I think we have truly blended everything we’ve done so far and taken it to the next level.
I could say it’s a return to the roots, like in the EP „Into the Fire“, but I believe this album is much more refined and polished. We are quite proud of this new record.
Which song from the current album should our readers definitely listen to?
It’s hard to choose, as the feedback has been varied across different songs, but to get an overall feel of the album, I’d suggest „Ritual“, „Closure“, and „Neurosis“.
Questions Out Of Curiosity
So far, you have mainly been heard in Portugal. Will this change now, especially with the new album?
I think our music has reached many parts of the world, but when it comes to playing live, we’ve only performed in Spain so far. Expanding our reach is definitely in our plans, and we are open to invitations and opportunities. Let’s see what we can achieve with this new album.
You have already shared the stage with greats like Destruction and Soulfly. Was that a special honor?
Oh man, what an honor indeed. In 2019, right before the pandemic, we were soaring. We opened for Soulfly here in our home country and met our idol Max Cavalera and his wonderful family. Just two days later, we played on the second stage at Resurrection Fest, right before Testament. As you mentioned, we had already had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Destruction, Crowbar, and Anti-Nowhere League before that. We are very proud of having performed at these really special shows.
When you think of metal from Portugal, you inevitably think of Moonspell, who have been in the metal business for 18 years. What do you associate with Moonspell? Are they also musical role models for you to some extent?
Moonspell are, and rightfully so, the biggest name in Heavy Metal from our country, and we take great pride in that since all of us have listened to them since we first got into the more extreme side of music. We may not have much in common musically, but their work ethic and the way they carry Portugal’s name across the world truly inspire us.
